 Frequently Asked Questions:

At what age should someone begin having regular gynecologic exams?

While there are no set guidelines on when a person should begin gynecologic care, regular gynecology visits can empower younger patients. Regular appointments can help patients feel more informed about their menstrual cycle, sexual health, reproduction, birth control, and self-care during menses.

Please remember that a gynecologic visit does not always require a pelvic exam. Patients should usually have visits every year. However, this schedule can change based on each patient’s needs and goals.

What can I expect from my first visit with Nexus Gynecology?

During your first visit our team will review your medical history with you and will discuss any concerns you may have. Treatment plans often include follow-up visits. These visits help us review lab results and imaging. They also ensure we meet your personal healthcare goals.

What is a Pap Smear and how is it collected? When do I start having Pap smears collected?

A pap smear is a screening tool used to evaluate your cervix for signs of cancer or precancerous cells. It also allows us to test for common vaginal or cervical infections. This includes HPV, a sexually transmitted infection that can cause cervical cancer.

Your healthcare provider collects a Pap smear after placing a speculum, which allows them to visualize the cervix. Once the provider can visualize the cervix, they will carefully place two brushes on it. They then collect tiny cells and send them for testing.

Health experts recommend starting Pap smears at the age of 21. Your healthcare provider will consider your personal risk factors. They will help you decide how often you should have them.
